Jackson’s giant sand sculpture memorial

Four international sand sculptors have been busy in the German Capital creating giant sand sculpture memorial to the ‘King of Pop’.

Made of 200 tonnes of sand and with a height of five metres, the giant sculpture is being crafted together in a shopping centre in the centre of the city.

Chief Carver, Martym Ryerse says he is trying to portray different periods of Michael Jackson's life.

"I tried to recreate different moments of his life in the sculpture for example the Jackson Five, his music with the album covers and his performance for Thriller," Ryerse told on Sunday (July 26).

Fellow carver, Daniel Glover from Florida, says his job is particularly difficult.

"I'm working on dangerous the album with the very intricate cover, so it's a painstaking job but I'm hopefully going to get it together in the next couple of days," Glover said.

The piece of art is being constructed using a special type of sand which because of the sharp edges on the grains means that it is better for modelling.

The sculpture is set to be finished on July 30 and will remain in the shopping centre for visitors to see for a whole year.
